And combined with our mayonnaise and mustard burger sauce, it just puts the icing on the cake.

My kids love hamburgers and making them at home for lunch, or a quick dinner alternative is excellent.

These are also great for family gatherings or other entertaining and sure to be a hit with your guests.

What is the difference between a cheeseburger and a hamburger?

The difference between a cheeseburger and a hamburger is pretty simple. A hamburger is usually pretty simple with the burger patty, bun, sauces, and pickles.

A cheeseburger contains all of the above but will have cheese over the top of the burger patty.

What cheese is best for a cheeseburger

There is no right or wrong cheese to use on your homemade deluxe cheeseburger. It does come down to your preference and taste.

However, cheddar cheese is quite popular to use on a cheeseburger as it has quite a bold flavor and adds to the burger. And it’s mine and my family’s choice of cheese.

There are other choices also, so if you are not a cheddar cheese fan, you can also consider some of the following:

  • American cheese
  • Brie
  • Colby
  • Swiss Cheese
  • Blue Cheese
  • Goat Cheese

And to help you a little more on what cheese to use, there is a helpful article from Food and Wine on the “9 best cheeses for burgers“.

How do you make a homemade deluxe cheeseburger from scratch?

Making this is simple, and you can even make this well ahead of time and freeze the patties, so you can use them as needed.

How to make the burger patties.

Homemade Deluxe Cheeseburger

To make the patties, you are going to need the following ingredients:

  • Ground Beef or Minced Beef
  • Garlic Powder
  • Dried Oregano
  • Dried Rosemary
  • Dried Thyme
  • Ground Cumin Seeds
  • Kosha Salt or sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Large eggs
  • Red or brown onion
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Ketchup

In a small bowl, whisk the eggs, then put them aside. Finely chop your onion; if you are making the sauce set two tablespoons of the chopped onion aside for the sauce.

Otherwise, use all of the onion in your burger patties.

In a large mixing bowl, break up the ground beef to make it easier to mix everything through.
Add Garlic Powder, Dried Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Ground Cumin Seeds, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, the whisked eggs, ketchup, salt, and pepper.

Using your hands, mix everything.
*A little tip, if you are having trouble combining everything in the bowl, do as much as you can, then empty the bowl onto your kitchen bench. Continue to combine all the ingredients until it is all mixed through.

To make the burger patties, divide the mixture into approximately 95g or 3.36 oz size portions.
I get about 15 patties out of this, but the quality will change if you want smaller, larger or thicker burger patties.

You can flatten them out using the palm of your hand, but I find the best tool to use to get an excellent even round shape is a burger press.

I use the Demax Hamburger Press that I brought from Catch.com.au, and it is effortless to use.

When using this press, lightly base with olive oil to stop the meat from sticking to the hamburger press.  Alternatively you can make patty papers out of some parchment paper if you do not want to use oil.

Place the mixture into the bottom and place the handle part on top and press down.

It will give you an excellent round shape and compact the meat together.

But if you do not have one and the demax is not available for you. There is another excellent one on amazon.com from the brand Meykers. And this one even comes with the nonstick patty papers.

If you want to cook the burger patties straight away, place them into a pre-heated skillet or frying pan over medium heat for about 3 minutes aside.

Depending on your stove type, cooking time may vary.

Try not to overcrowd the skillet with the patties. Only put in enough where you are still going to have plenty of room to flip them. I usually cook two at a time in mine.

How to freeze your hamburger patties?

It is good to make your homemade deluxe cheeseburger patties well in advance and freeze them for the best results.

Your hamburger patties will last 3 to 4 months in the freezer. Making it so easy to grab one or two whenever you feel like a cheeseburger.

If you do not have hamburger containers for freezing, you can line the back of a baking tray with parchment paper or baking paper.

Place your burger patties on top of the paper. I get about four on there.

Then place another layer of parchment paper on top of the patties and repeat. Making sure that the patties you put on the top line up with the ones underneath.

Once you have made all the hamburger patties, place one final piece of parchment paper on top.

Cover with cling wrap and place in a flat section of the freezer overnight or until frozen.

Once they are frozen, put each patty into a ziplock bag and place them into a freezer-safe container to keep them from getting broken.

But to make freezing easier than I do it, these all in one patty maker and freezer containers are great. My mum used to have some similar to these when I was little and used them all the time.

How to make the burger sauce

This wouldn’t be a homemade deluxe cheeseburger without this fantastic sauce to top it off.

For the sauce, you will need:

  • White Wine Vinegar
  • White Sugar
  • Mayonnaise
  • American or Yellow Mustard
  • Hamburger Pickles
  • Red or Brown Onion
  • Smoked Paprika
  • Garlic Powder

You can make this sauce in advance if you like and store it in the refrigerator. I advise not putting this in a sauce bottle with a twist nozzle, as the chopped up onion and pickles may get stuck in it.

Instead, please keep it in an air-tight container when you want to store it. The sauce will keep for one to two weeks in the fridge.

Let get started by combining the white wine vinegar and sugar in a small bowl. Stir until the sugar has dissolved, then set aside.

Dice up the pickles as thin as possible, and if you do not have onion set aside already, you will need to dice the onion finely.

The sauce requires two tablespoons, so if you make this without making the burger patties, use a small onion to avoid too much waste.

Next, in a medium-sized bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, chopped pickles and onion, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and the dissolved sugar in the white wine vinegar.

Once combined, store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

Homemade Deluxe Cheeseburger

To dress your homemade deluxe cheeseburger, you are going to need:

  • Hamburger bun
  • Streaky Bacon
  • Cheese
  • Burger patty
  • Burger sauce
  • Ketchup (optional)
  • Onion Rings(raw or cooked)
  • Sliced Pickles

Cook the bacon; we like to air-fry ours. And cook your burger patty.
While your bacon and burger patty is cooking, lightly toast your burger bun.
Flip the patty, and place a slice of cheese on top to melt.
Spread a generous amount of the sauce on the bottom bun.
Place the patty with the melted cheese on top of the sauce.
Put on the pickles, onion rings, and cooked bacon.
Add a small amount of ketchup if you like, and then the top of the bun.

If you are making a double.
Spread some of the sauce on the inside of the bottom and top of the lightly toasted hamburger bun.
Place the first patty with the melted cheese on top of the bottom bun with sauce.
Put on the pickles, then the second pattie with melted cheese.
Next, add the onion rings and the cooked bacon.
Add a small amount of ketchup if you like, and then the top of the bun with the burger sauce on it.

How do I stop my burger patties from falling apart?

If your patties are falling apart, there are a few things you may need to consider.

Handling the mince too much in your hands can cause this due to the warmth in your hands.

When mixing, you need to use your hands to get the best results for combining the ingredients. But once you have formed the patties, remember to refrigerate them for at least 15 minutes.

I like to do this for 30 minutes to an hour.

If you feel you need to, you can add either an extra egg or some more breadcrumbs, even a combination of both.

The eggs and breadcrumbs act as the binding to keep your burger patties together.

Be mindful that measurements can vary depending on where you live, so you might need to adjust these.

A low cooking temp can cause this also, so a medium to medium-high heat would be best, depending on your stove or grill. Try not to have the heat on high as you do not want to have the outside cooked and the inside raw.

For the best results cooking your patties from frozen can help to stop them from falling apart. But only take out what you can cook at a time.

Do not pull them all out as they will thaw as you are cooking the others.
