Irresistible Pizza Jaffle Recipe, A Twist On Pizza Pockets
Dive into the world of jaffles with this irresistible Pizza Jaffle recipe! Experience the familiar comfort of pizza pockets with a delightful twist as we meld classic pizza flavours in a toasted treat. Perfect for quick lunches or snack-time indulgence.
Jaffles are a classic Australian lunch option. I grew up on these as a kid, usually filled with spaghetti, baked beans or ham and cheese.
Oh, and I can’t forget how much our kids love eating them.
But I wanted to try something different, even though the classics are great. I wanted to create a budget-friendly, fuss-free pizza pocket-style jaffle.
And this has been a hit with the family; the kids have asked this to be a regular.
This recipe doesn’t just have to be for lunch; it can also make for a quick and straightforward dinner recipe.
And if you love camping, this recipe is an excellent option for campfire cooking.
How to make our Pizza Jaffle Recipe.
For this, you need a sandwich maker or a jaffle iron if you want to make it while camping.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
Prepare the Bread:
Butter one side of each slice of bread with butter or margarine.
Place one slice of bread in the sandwich maker, butter side down.
Spread about 1 and 1/2 tsp of pizza tomato paste onto the bread.
Add the ham pieces over the top and then sprinkle 1/4 cup or a handful of pizza cheese over the ham.
If you want to add pineapple, use less ham.
Pro Tip: make sure not to overfill and that there is a good gap around the edges of the bread to ensure a seal is created and nothing oozes out.
Optionally, you can add extra pizza tomato paste over the top by either squeezing a small amount over the ingredients or spreading another 1 and 1/2 teaspoons on the slices of bread going on top.
Place the other slices of bread on top, butter side up.
Close the sandwich maker and cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until the bread is golden brown, depending on your sandwich maker/jaffle iron model.
What other ingredients can be added?
Much like pizza, these jaffles are incredibly versatile, and you can use a wide range of ingredients to match various flavour profiles. Here’s a list of popular pizza toppings:
Meats: Pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ground beef, salami, chicken, ham, anchovies.
Vegetables: Bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, black olives, green olives, jalapeños, artichoke hearts, spinach, arugula, garlic, broccoli, and red onion.
Cheeses: Mozzarella, cheddar, feta, gouda, provolone, ricotta, goat cheese, and parmesan.
Others: Capers.
Sauces: Besides traditional tomato-based pizza sauce, you can use alfredo sauce, pesto, olive oil & garlic, barbecue sauce, and even buffalo sauce.
Herbs and Seasonings: Basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, freshly cracked black pepper, thyme, and rosemary.
However, unlike traditional pizza, some ingredients do need to be pre-cooked before adding.
Meats:
- Sausage: Most sausages release a lot of fat and require a longer cooking time to be safely consumed.
- Bacon: While it might cook a bit inside the jaffle, pre-cooking ensures it’s crispy and fully cooked.
- Ground Beef: Needs to be fully cooked for safety.
- Chicken: Raw chicken takes a while to cook thoroughly, so it’s crucial to pre-cook it.
Vegetables:
- Bell Peppers and Onions: While they can be added raw for crunch, sautéing them beforehand can enhance their flavour and ensure they are soft.
- Mushrooms: They release a lot of moisture when cooked. Sautéing them first can prevent the jaffle from getting too soggy.
- Spinach: Fresh spinach can release a lot of water. If you want to use it, consider sautéing it first to remove excess moisture.
- Garlic: Raw garlic can be potent. If you prefer a milder, sweeter garlic flavour, consider using roasted or sautéed garlic.
- Broccoli: It’s best to use pre-cooked or at least parboiled broccoli to ensure it’s tender.
Others:
- Pineapple: If you’re using fresh pineapple, consider giving it a quick sauté to remove some moisture and enhance sweetness. Canned pineapple tidbits, if drained well, can be used as is.
There are also quite a few people, and my husband is one of them, that love egg on pizza, and yes, an egg can be added to your pizza jaffle.
I have included a few ways that you can do this, depending on the result you wish to achieve:
- Scrambled: You can whisk the egg with a little milk, salt, and pepper, then pre-cook it as scrambled eggs. This ensures the egg is fully cooked, and you have a predictable texture inside your jaffle.
- Hard or Soft Boiled: You can pre-cook the egg to a hard or soft boil, then slice or chop it and add it to the jaffle.
- Poached: A pre-poached egg can also be added, though it might be a bit more delicate to handle than a boiled egg.
Pro Tip: when adding ingredients, ensure you don’t overfill the jaffle to prevent spillage or bursting at the seams. And to be an even cook of the ingredients inside.
