Sausage Patties and Savoury Rice

Sharing is caring!

This sausage patties and savoury rice recipe is another from my childhood. Mum often cooked this for the family, and even though it is such a simple dish, it is delicious to eat.

My kids love this meal also, and I love that you can cook the patties and prepare the rice ahead of time.

There are days when I have a not so busy day, but after school is just insane, especially if our kids have their dance or karate classes.
So being able to have most of this meal done and ready to go for when we get home makes it much easier.

How to make Sausage Patties and Savoury Rice step by step.

Salt and Pepper
Olive Oil

In a large mixing bowl, add the sausage mince, breadcrumbs, egg, worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, mixed herbs, salt and pepper.
You can add some spinach or even your own combination of herbs, such as basil and garlic, if you want to change things up a bit.

Use your hands, mix all the ingredients until well combined, and then divide them into even portions. Make each portion into a ball, roll in flour, then flatten slightly.

Each pattie should be around one to one and a half centimetres thick.

Add oil to a fry pan and heat over medium heat. Remove excess flour and add the patties to the pan and cook until both sides are a nice golden brown.

Don’t overcrowd the frypan, so a few batches will need to be done at a time.

Line an oven-proof dish with a lid with a paper towel and place each cooked pattie in the dish to drain the excess oil off.
When all the patties are cooked, place the lid on the dish and put it in a low oven at around 125 to 150 C to keep warm.

Rinse your rice, then add to a saucepan of water and cook until tender.
Drain the rice and rinse to remove any excess starch.

Put the rice aside to stand for a while.
Finely chop the onion and celery sticks, then grate the carrots.

In a large frypan, add a little oil and heat over a high temperature. Add the onion and celery and saute until the onion starts to become transparent.

Turn down to low, add the rice and grated carrot, salt and pepper. Cook until the rice is warmed through.

Serving size for Sausage Patties and Savoury Rice.

I get roughly 15 patties from this recipe and by using only a small portion of rice, I can feed four people with this recipe. There are usually leftover patties which I store in the refrigerator and my kids will have them on a sandwich the next day or just on there own.

But if I am cooking for 5 or 6 people I double my rice ingredients only as there is enough to allow each person to at least get two patties.
